The “Gowanus Water House” is a dynamic, multi-purpose urban i
ntervention along the Gowanus Canal, serving as a workshop, warehouse, community center, and recreational park. Positioned on a once-contaminated industrial brownfield, the site anchors the southernmost point of the canal’s emerging recreational network. The project’s central challenge lies in accommodating diverse programmatic needs while meeting Net Zero Carbon goals within a timber structural framework. Leveraging its unique waterside location, the design incorporates two innovative wind chimneys to enable passive cooling. By quite literally inviting the canal into the site, the project not only achieves ambitious sustainability targets but also introduces a “kayak-through” experience, reimagining the waterfront as an entertaining aquatic station at the end of the canal and a connector between neighborhoods and championing a new, carbon-conscious way of urban living.
